SB120

The Yeti SB120 is a short-travel 29er trail bike designed for riders who want an efficient pedaler for long backcountry days but prefer a stout, capable chassis over a fragile cross-country race bike. Introduced for the 2023 model year, it replaces the older SB115, shifting the platform away from its race-oriented roots toward a more versatile trail identity. Built around 120mm of rear travel and a 130mm fork, the frame features a rotated Switch Infinity layout, a threaded bottom bracket, and refined internal routing. It blurs the line between cross-country efficiency and trail capability, offering a highly composed ride that prioritizes traction and momentum over pure weight savings.

Fit and geometry

The SB120 utilizes a modernized geometry suite that balances climbing posture with descending agility, avoiding the ultra-slack angles found on some aggressive trail bikes. A moderately steep seat tube angle places the rider in an upright, efficient position for long ascents without feeling cramped on flat traverses. The reach is roomy, giving riders plenty of space to shift their weight and maneuver the bike through technical sections.

Yeti employs size-specific chainstays across the six-size run, ensuring that the rear center grows proportionally with the front triangle. This approach helps maintain consistent weight distribution and cornering characteristics for both small and tall riders. The head tube angle is conservative for the trail category, which keeps the steering precise and responsive at lower speeds and on undulating terrain. While this geometry makes the bike highly agile and easy to navigate through tight switchbacks, it demands a more active, centered riding posture when tackling steep, high-speed descents compared to slacker alternatives.

Builds

Yeti offers the SB120 in two carbon frame tiers: the standard C-Series and the premium Turq series. The Turq frames use a higher-modulus carbon layup to save weight while maintaining the same stiffness profile. Crucially, Turq models also feature an updated version of the Switch Infinity hardware with improved bearings and seals, whereas C-Series builds use the previous generation mechanism.

The build ladder is firmly positioned at the premium end of the market, carrying a significant boutique premium. C-Series models typically feature Fox Performance suspension and mid-tier drivetrains, while Turq builds upgrade to Fox Factory suspension, DT Swiss alloy wheelsets, and SRAM wireless shifting.

A recurring criticism across the build range is the braking specification. Most models are equipped with SRAM G2 four-piston brakes, which many riders find underpowered for the speeds the chassis can comfortably carry. Upgrading to more robust brakes or larger rotors is a common recommendation. While the component-to-dollar ratio is low compared to consumer-direct brands, the value lies in the highly refined frame construction and sophisticated suspension design.

Reviews

Reviewers consistently praise the SB120 for its pedaling efficiency and exceptional suspension performance. The Switch Infinity system provides a "seemingly sentient rear wheel feel" (Mountain Bike Rider), offering a firm platform under power while remaining highly active over roots and square-edged hits. Testers noted that the bike is "silky smooth through the entirety of its travel" (Pinkbike), giving it a composed character that handles rough terrain better than its travel numbers suggest.

On climbs, the bike prioritizes traction and steady momentum over nervous, sprinting acceleration. It rewards riders who stay seated and maintain a steady cadence, keeping the rear tire "glued to the ground" (Mountain Bike Action) on technical ascents.

The primary tradeoff noted by testers is the bike's weight. At nearly thirty pounds for most builds, it lacks the snappy acceleration of a dedicated cross-country race bike. Additionally, while the chassis is stout and capable, the relatively steep head angle means the front end requires a more attentive pilot on the steepest, high-speed descents.
