Teammachine R 01 Four

The fifth-generation BMC Teammachine SLR 01 is a dedicated lightweight race bike that borrows heavily from the brand’s aerodynamic Teammachine R platform. While it remains a climbing specialist at its core, this iteration features a reduced frontal profile, slimmer tube shapes, and a redesigned fork to improve aerodynamic efficiency. BMC managed to cut 222 grams from the frame, fork, and seatpost compared to the previous generation, achieving a lighter chassis without sacrificing lateral stiffness.

Visually, the Gen 5 moves away from the chunky, squared-off tubes of its predecessor in favor of a more traditional, slender silhouette. It also drops the older seatpost wedge for a new clamp design integrated behind the aero seatpost. Functional updates include fully hidden cable routing via BMC’s ICS ecosystem, proprietary Aerocore bottle cages designed to smooth airflow, and an increased measured tire clearance of 32mm to accommodate modern racing rubber.

Fit and geometry

The Teammachine SLR 01 retains a long and low race posture, demanding an aggressive, forward-leaning rider position. The most defining aspect of its geometry is the consistent 63mm trail figure used across all six frame sizes. This is noticeably longer than the 55mm to 60mm trail typical of modern climbing bikes, trading a fraction of low-speed steering reactivity for enhanced stability on fast descents.

A relatively tall 69mm bottom bracket drop further shapes the handling. While higher than some contemporary race frames, this design minimizes the risk of pedal strikes, allowing riders to pedal through tight corners without hesitation. On smaller sizes, BMC steepened the seat tube angle to better align with the fit parameters of the Teammachine R.

Rider contact points are heavily integrated. Most SLR 01 builds feature the ICS Carbon Evo one-piece carbon cockpit, which dictates stem length and bar width based on frame size. While the frame accommodates 32mm tires, the handling geometry was specifically optimized for 26mm tires, meaning riders who size up their rubber may experience a subtle shift in steering feel.

Builds

The Teammachine lineup splits into two distinct frame tiers: the premium SLR 01 carbon and the standard SLR carbon. The SLR 01 models utilize the lighter, higher-modulus layup and feature the fully integrated ICS one-piece carbon cockpit. The standard SLR models use a slightly heavier carbon layup and rely on a two-piece bar and stem combination, bringing the entry price down significantly.

At the top of the range, the SLR 01 One and Two builds are equipped with SRAM Red AXS and Shimano Dura-Ace Di2, respectively. These flagship models roll on premium DT Swiss ARC 1100 DICUT wheels. The mid-tier SLR 01 Three and Four builds step down to SRAM Force AXS and Shimano Ultegra Di2, paired with BMC’s house-brand CR 40 SL carbon wheelsets. Notably, BMC includes crank-based power meters—either Quarq for SRAM or 4iiii for Shimano—across all SLR 01 builds and the top standard SLR build.

The base SLR One and Two models offer more accessible entry points, utilizing SRAM Force or Shimano Ultegra drivetrains paired with basic carbon or alloy wheelsets. Across the entire range, BMC specs 26mm Pirelli P Zero tires and 160mm brake rotors front and rear.

Reviews

Critics consistently praise the Teammachine SLR 01 for its immediate power transfer and exceptional descending manners. The substantial weight reduction translates directly to the road, with testers noting the bike feels "springy and lightweight and like momentum giving" (YouTube) on steep gradients. When riders stand up and sprint, the chassis resists flex, delivering a "punchier, firmer character" (YouTube) than some competing lightweight frames.

While climbing performance is expected, the bike’s high-speed stability is what sets it apart from twitchier race platforms. Reviewers highlight its predictable steering, calling it a "pinpoint-accurate bike on descents" (Escape Collective). The geometry allows riders to carry momentum confidently, as the "front end encourages you to get off the brakes earlier and hold more speed, especially through higher-speed corners" (Escape Collective).

The primary point of contention among testers is BMC’s decision to optimize the frame around 26mm tires, which come stock on the complete builds. While the frame clears 32mm rubber, reviewers found the narrow stock spec out of step with current trends. Many suggested that swapping to 28mm or 30mm tires would noticeably improve vibration damping on rough pavement without dulling the bike's "almost unmatched" (Road.cc) acceleration.
