Usma SL

The Wilier Usma SL is the more attainable version of the brand’s modern XC race hardtail, built to deliver the same overall platform concept as the Usma SLR without the same emphasis on absolute frame weight. It is a 29er carbon hardtail designed specifically around a 100 mm suspension fork, with Wilier keeping the brief tightly focused on contemporary cross-country racing rather than broad trail-bike versatility. The frame is 1x-only, uses SRAM UDH, supports modern wide XC tires on Boost wheels, and allows internal routing for a 27.2 mm dropper post.

What distinguishes the Usma SL is that it preserves the SLR’s race-oriented geometry and handling priorities while sitting at a more accessible point in the range. Wilier pairs a relatively stable front end with a notably short 425 mm rear triangle, a combination aimed at balancing high-speed composure with the quick acceleration and direct response expected from an XC hardtail. In the market, the Usma SL fits as a serious carbon race hardtail for riders who want current geometry and clean modern standards, but do not need the most weight-optimized version of the platform.

Fit and geometry

The Usma SL’s geometry is firmly in line with current XC hardtail thinking. Across all sizes, the head tube angle is 67.75 degrees, which is notably slacker than older cross-country race bikes and should give the bike a calmer, more confident front end on descents and rougher race courses. That is paired with a 75-degree seat tube angle, a number that places the rider in a centered, efficient pedaling position for steep seated climbing. Reach figures of 405 mm (S), 430 mm (M), 454 mm (L), and 478 mm (XL) are modern without being extreme, suggesting a fit that is race-focused but not unusually stretched.

Handling is shaped heavily by the short 425 mm chainstays, which are consistent across the size range. For an XC hardtail, that points to quick rear-end response, easier front-wheel lifting, and a more agile feel in tighter terrain. Wheelbase grows from 1090 mm in S to 1177 mm in XL, so larger sizes should retain stability in proportion to rider size. Stack numbers from 597 mm to 630 mm indicate a moderately low, performance-oriented front end, consistent with a bike intended for aggressive pedaling efficiency rather than an upright trail-bike posture.

Builds

Wilier offers the Usma SL in four complete builds, all centered on 1x12 drivetrains and all listed with the alloy Stemma S2 cockpit/stem setup rather than a more premium integrated carbon front end. The range spans SRAM and Shimano options: SRAM S1000 T-Type AXS 1x12, SRAM NX Eagle 1x12, Shimano XT Di2 1x12, and Shimano XT 1x12. That gives buyers a clear spread from more affordable mechanical transmission choices to higher-end electronic shifting.

The most notable split in the lineup is between conventional cable-actuated groups and electronic systems. Riders prioritizing lower cost and simpler replacement parts will likely look at the NX Eagle and mechanical XT builds, while the S1000 T-Type AXS and XT Di2 versions target buyers who want the cleaner operation and premium feel of electronic shifting on the same carbon race chassis. Even without detailed pricing or full component lists, the build strategy is straightforward: the Usma SL frame is positioned as the accessible entry to Wilier’s XC hardtail platform, with multiple drivetrain tiers to suit different budgets and preferences.
