El Jefe SRAM X0 Eagle Transmission Kit

The Revel El Jefe is a titanium 29er hardtail designed for ultra-endurance racing and fast-paced backcountry bikepacking. Originally introduced under Revel’s sister brand Why Cycles as a signature model for endurance racer Jefe Branham, the platform transitioned to the Revel nameplate while retaining its core concept. It is built around a 120mm to 130mm fork and prioritizes long-distance efficiency over aggressive trail riding.

The frame utilizes cold-formed titanium tubing and CNC-machined details to balance durability with a responsive ride feel. It caters to riders who want a fast, stripped-down platform for covering massive mileage on varied terrain. Rather than focusing on plush comfort or downhill stability, the El Jefe is positioned as a race-oriented tool that remains manageable when the route turns rough, making it well-suited for multi-day singletrack routes and demanding cross-country efforts.

Fit and geometry

The El Jefe utilizes a modern cross-country geometry that keeps the rider centered and efficient without pushing into aggressive trail bike territory. A size large features a 474mm reach paired with a moderate 67.5-degree head tube angle. This combination creates a long cockpit that provides breathing room on extended climbs and fluid body positioning over technical obstacles, while keeping the steering sharp and responsive.

A low 68mm bottom bracket drop anchors the handling, giving the bike a grounded, maneuverable feel through tight corners and rocky sections. The 73.3-degree seat tube angle places the rider in a traditional, power-focused pedaling stance.

The defining feature of the bike’s fit and handling is its sliding dropout system, which allows the chainstay length to be adjusted between 420mm and 435mm. In the shortest position, the rear end becomes highly reactive for quick directional changes, though it can compromise front-end tracking on steep ascents. Lengthening the stays increases climbing stability and straight-line composure, allowing riders to tune the wheelbase to their local terrain or cargo weight.

Builds

The El Jefe frame is built with long-haul reliability in mind, featuring internal cable routing, an integrated headset, and a threaded BSA bottom bracket. It clears 29x2.6-inch tires in standard configurations, with room for up to 2.8-inch rubber if the sliding dropouts are pulled all the way back. The dropouts also allow the frame to be set up either geared or as a singlespeed.

A mid-cycle update modernized the frame’s drivetrain compatibility. Newer frames feature a sliding UDH dropout, replacing the older non-UDH standard. This future-proofs the rear end, allowing direct mounting of modern SRAM Transmission derailleurs while preserving the adjustable chainstay functionality.

Revel offers the El Jefe in three complete builds, all utilizing SRAM drivetrains. The entry point is the SRAM Eagle 90 Kit, which provides a standard shifting setup. The ladder then moves to the SRAM X0 Eagle Transmission Kit and tops out with the SRAM XX Eagle Transmission Kit. The two upper tiers capitalize on the updated UDH interface, offering robust, direct-mount shifting intended to withstand the rigors of backcountry racing and extended bikepacking routes.

Reviews

Reviewers consistently note the El Jefe’s immediate power transfer and lively acceleration. Unloaded, the bike "accelerates fast and handles swiftly" (Bikepacking), rewarding pedaling effort with direct forward momentum. While the steering can initially feel nervous on steep, technical climbs, riders found that dialing in the suspension allows the front end to settle into a precise, intuitive rhythm.

The platform’s standout trait is how well it maintains its composure when burdened with bikepacking gear. Even carrying a multi-day load over chunky doubletrack and technical singletrack, the frame felt "solid, stable, and sure, retaining its incredibly responsive and efficient feel" (Bikepacking). This ability to handle cargo without becoming sluggish or unwieldy underscores its ultra-endurance pedigree.

However, the race-focused design introduces a few practical tradeoffs. To maintain a svelte profile, the frame omits traditional rack mounts, and the relatively straight top tube results in a smaller main triangle for frame bags. Additionally, while the adjustable dropouts offer tuning options, slamming them to the shortest setting turns the bike into a "carving machine" on descents but makes it difficult to keep the front wheel planted on steep climbs (Bikepacking). Most riders will likely prefer a middle setting to balance climbing traction with downhill agility.
