Chainsaw DH GX 7s Air

Introduced in 2023, the Devinci Chainsaw DH is a dedicated gravity and bike park platform built around a Canadian-made aluminum frame. Rather than chasing World Cup race times, it is designed for aggressive freeride lines, heavy impacts, and lap after lap of lift-accessed terrain. The foundation is a high-pivot interpretation of Devinci’s Split Pivot suspension, delivering 170mm of rear travel paired with a 190mm dual-crown fork and a mixed-wheel setup.

The frame utilizes an idler pulley to manage chain growth from the rearward axle path, prioritizing composure through rough sections. Devinci also includes a flip-chip system to preserve geometry if riders experiment with wheel sizes, alongside modern standards like a threaded bottom bracket and universal derailleur hanger. It is a robust, straightforward machine for riders who prioritize durability and big-hit capability over pedaling efficiency or race-day weight.

Fit and geometry

The Chainsaw DH utilizes aggressive, gravity-specific geometry to keep the rider centered and stable at high speeds. A slack 62-degree head tube angle pushes the front wheel far ahead, working in tandem with a tall stack height to create an upright, commanding posture on steep descents. This high front end prevents the rider's weight from pitching forward during heavy braking or when dropping into vertical chutes.

To balance the long front center, Devinci employs size-specific chainstays, which measure a relatively short 430mm on the medium frame. This rear-end dimension, combined with the smaller 27.5-inch rear wheel, prevents the bike from feeling overly long or difficult to maneuver. The mixed-wheel configuration allows riders to lean the bike aggressively into corners and shift their weight further back without buzzing the rear tire. While the bike is not designed for extended pedaling, the steep seat tube angle places the rider in a forward, efficient position for winching up short transfer climbs.

Builds

Devinci keeps the Chainsaw DH lineup streamlined, offering two complete builds that share an identical frame, drivetrain, and wheelset. Both the GX 7s Air and GX 7s Coil models are built around a SRAM GX DH 7-speed drivetrain, a RockShox Boxxer Base RC fork, and heavy-duty RaceFace ARC30 rims wrapped in thick Maxxis downhill-casing tires.

The primary distinction between the two models lies in the suspension and braking components. The Air build utilizes a RockShox Vivid S+ rear shock and SRAM Maven Bronze brakes, catering to riders who prefer the tunability and progressive feel of an air spring. The Coil build swaps in a RockShox Super Deluxe Coil Select+ RT shock and SRAM Code R brakes, offering the supple, linear stroke favored by many park riders.

Priced aggressively, both builds prioritize durable, proven components over lightweight or exotic materials. The inclusion of direct-mount stems, 35mm-clamp aluminum handlebars, and robust aluminum frames underscores the platform's focus on surviving seasons of lift-accessed riding without requiring immediate upgrades.

Reviews

Reviewers consistently characterize the Chainsaw DH as a highly capable descender that excels in steep, rough terrain. The high-pivot suspension and coil shock options draw praise for their deep, active stroke, with the hydraulic bottom-out specifically noted for "keeping things smooth on the harshest flat landings" (Nicadv). On the trail, the bike exhibits a distinct plowing ability, tracking predictably through chaotic sections without getting deflected. One tester described it as having an "e-bike plow factor" (YouTube) that easily eats up chunky impacts.

Despite its heft and downhill focus, testers found the bike surprisingly willing to leave the ground and navigate tight corners. However, the robust build and high-pivot design come with clear tradeoffs. The bike is heavy, and the combination of thick tire casings and the idler pulley creates noticeable drag on flat sections or short climbs.

Reviewers also highlighted the frame's exceptional quietness, noting that the idler pulley was "significantly quieter and less noticeable" (YouTube) than on competing high-pivot downhill bikes. The primary mechanical critique centered on the factory wheel build, with multiple testers reporting that the rear wheel lost tension during its first day in the bike park, though the rims themselves remained undamaged and easily re-tensioned.
