Extrema Italia SRAM Force E1/XX SL Eagle Transmission AXS 1x12 Discus 45|40

The 3T Extrema Italia is a highly specialized gravel platform designed to blur the line between drop-bar racing and cross-country mountain biking. Positioned alongside the Racemax Italia, the Extrema trades mixed-surface speed for outright capability on rugged, technical terrain. At its core is an aerodynamic carbon frameset engineered around massive 700c tires, offering up to 57mm of clearance. To maintain aerodynamic efficiency with such large rubber, 3T utilizes a heavily sculpted downtube and a tight rear-wheel cutout to manage airflow.

Manufactured in Italy using a proprietary filament-winding process, the frame is built for demanding ultra-endurance events and fast bikepacking. It features modern adventure details like triple cargo mounts on the fork legs, a universal derailleur hanger, and compatibility with 27.2mm round seatposts, allowing riders to easily run a dropper. This is a focused machine for riders who want to push a drop-bar bike deep into mountain bike territory.

Fit and geometry

The Extrema Italia utilizes 3T’s 3Touring geometry, which subtly shifts the rider into a more upright posture compared to the brand's dedicated race bikes. By combining a higher stack with a shorter reach, the frame reduces lower back strain during long endurance events and makes it easier to comfortably utilize the drops on steep descents.

To balance the massive tires, 3T employs a relatively slack head tube angle paired with size-specific fork offsets. This creates a long front center that enhances stability at speed while minimizing toe overlap. Out back, the chainstays are stretched to 437mm across all sizes, prioritizing a calm, steadfast ride over hyper-responsive agility.

The cockpit relies on 3T’s Integrale system, which routes brake hoses internally beneath a proprietary stem. This setup allows riders to adjust stem length or handlebar height without disconnecting hydraulic lines. Most builds feature the Aeroghiaia handlebar, which pairs a narrow, aerodynamic top section with dramatically flared drops, giving riders a wide, stable stance for navigating technical singletrack.

Builds

The Extrema Italia lineup sits firmly at the premium end of the market, with all builds utilizing the same Italian-made, filament-wound carbon frameset. The range is exclusively designed for electronic shifting and 1x drivetrains, heavily favoring mullet configurations that pair drop-bar shifters with wide-range mountain bike rear derailleurs.

The ladder begins with Shimano GRX Di2 and SRAM Rival AXS builds, both featuring massive 10-51T or 10-52T cassettes to help offset the bike's overall weight on steep climbs. Moving up the range introduces SRAM Force and XX SL Eagle Transmission components, which utilize a direct-mount rear derailleur for robust shifting under load. The flagship models feature SRAM Red XPLR AXS, with one variant including a power meter and another utilizing 3T's proprietary Torno carbon crankset.

All builds roll on 3T Discus 45|40 LTD carbon wheelsets wrapped in 55mm Continental Terra Adventure tires, ensuring the bike's extreme clearance is utilized straight out of the box. While the component spec is undeniably high-end, the steep entry price reflects the specialized European frame construction rather than pure component value.

Reviews

Reviewers consistently praise the Extrema Italia for its exceptional comfort and composure on aggressive off-road terrain, though they acknowledge it requires compromises on smoother surfaces. The massive tire clearance acts as a primary suspension system, allowing the rigid carbon frame to "suck up off-road imperfections" (Off) and maintain momentum over roots and rocks. On technical descents and flowy singletrack, the bike feels steadfast and highly capable. Testers found that it "simply rips its way through terrain" (BikeRadar) that would normally force a gravel rider to slow down and carefully pick a line.

However, the substantial weight of the frame and oversized tires creates a distinct tradeoff in efficiency. Multiple reviewers noted that the bike can feel "ponderous on tarmac" (Cyclist Magazine) and requires noticeable effort to accelerate from a standstill or drag up steep, smooth climbs. Above moderate speeds on pavement, the wide knobby tires introduce significant drag.

Despite the sluggish acceleration, the frame itself is highly rigid, ensuring excellent power transfer when winching up steep, loose gradients. The overall consensus points to a machine that excels in ultra-endurance events and rugged exploration, provided the rider spends the vast majority of their time on challenging dirt rather than mixed-surface loops.
